Color Study - Personal Work

I've been painting urban subjects for my own personal work. The idea of transfiguration of the commonplace is my motivation. I've found developing a color study in vector allows for a better understanding when developing my painting. The final painting is in oils with minor adjustments in the painting of the final. I've had an internal discussion between my digital work, and my traditional painting for years. One informs the other.Vector study for painting.

Sketchbook samples

Every two weeks, some illustrator pals and I get together at a local cafe here in Toronto for an event we've christened "Pen Club" where we drink beer, eat cake and draw in our sketchbooks. Here are a couple of fresh pages from the most recent one last night...

Zimmer Twins iPhone apps

My friends at zinc Roe with whom I created the award-winning Zimmer Twins project have just launched three super cool Zimmer Twins iPhone apps featuring artwork by yours truly. If only I had an iPhone. More info here or get the games here.

Punks

Last July 4th weekend I did a cover for LA Weekly. Subject is, "how two veterans of the L.A. punk scene wound up on a collision course, until only one was left standing, the other shot once through the heart at point-blank range with a .25 caliber handgun". The art director, Darrick Rainey suggested the classic face card composition, and I offered a scene sketch. I fleshed out his suggestion which I liked as well. Went with the brush and ink approach for a "punky" feel. Bright contrasty colors for newsprint. Fun assignment.

This just came from Lucia Monfried and Irene Vandervoort at Dutton. They did a really good job, I thought, and were very patient with yours truly.
Redsox fans! This is a really good Ted Williams book for your kids.

Recent image I did for a July women's magazine cover.
