Drawing on the walls

A few years ago, two illustrator pals and I formed a collective called Trio Magnus born out of our mutual love of drinking and doodling. Since then, we've had a couple of fun shows and even published a book. The most recent opportunity we've had to show our work happened last week thanks to our friend, publisher and patron, Anne Koyama, who got us in as one of the featured exhibitors at the relaunch of Keep Six Contemporary, a recently renovated gallery here in Toronto which includes a number of smaller studio spaces. We proceeded to take over one of these spaces and cover the walls with not only collaborative pieces we'd done in the past, but also a 6 x 6 foot drawing (Snowman markers on primed canvas) created on the spot as the evening progressed. Does it get any better than drinking beer and drawing on the walls? Absolutely not!

Cover Art BusinessWeek Feb.16th - Exxon

I worked with the art director, Andrew Horton, at BusinessWeek magazine. Andrew pretty much had his idea for the cover nailed down when he phoned. So I focused on fleshing it out, and offering a subtle shift. It was sketch #2 that was working for him.

I drew up three rough pencils;

New York Times - Pastime

Aviva Michael phoned with an assignment for the week in review section of the New York Times. The art was for the weekend of the Super Bowl, and subject being on America's number one pastime. I guess in a number of survey's it's been football that has come out on top. Although more people actually play baseball. Basketball's placement varied from survey to survey. The art was going to appear in color, and black & white. I shuffled the colors for the different applications.

PC World - Grading Tech

Well here's my first post; A recent assignment was for PC World magazine. The exciting subject of tech support! The art director, Beth Kamoroff described the subject as being the grading of the follow-up service offered by the big tech companies. We went to final art with sketch#2.

New Baby

Hi everyone - This is a baby card that a client rejected so I offered it to friends as their birth announcement. It had the cat and bird in it (perfect for them as they also have cats and birds) and they sent me a pic of their dogs and I added them. They didn't know the sex but I guess maybe I am psysic as I had it all ready with 'It's a girl!' Just had to add the date and baby info. Of course the baby came last Friday, the day I flew to Portland, OR. I didn't bring a Wacom tablet with me so I had to let go of handwritten info but I think it came out cute with type anyway. How illustrators who are on the computer do anything without a Wacom is beyond me.

Miles Hyman's Green Mountain Coffee packages

Green Mountain Coffee® has received an American Package Design Award from Graphic Design USA for their line of 10-ounce and 12-ounce bags of coffee.
The crisp, contemporary look was skillfully created by Miles Hyman who switched from his traditional Pastel style to a fresh digital style especially for the redesign.
The bags, which were introduced to supermarket shelves last year, were chosen among 1,200 entries to receive a certificate of excellence award.
Miles created all of the art for everything from the paper cups to the delivery trucks!
